What the setup window asks

The Windows installer is a Nullsoft setup. It asks for a folder and which pieces to keep: Nmap core files, the PATH registration, the packet driver, Zenmap, Ncat, and Ndiff. Nping is part of the suite as well.

An older setup capture still lists WinPcap. Current installers install Npcap instead. Do not go looking for a WinPcap checkbox on 7.991. That window is shown on the features page.

If Zenmap cannot find nmap, reinstall with path registration left on. The 7.96 release also fixed a macOS case where Zenmap would not start when nmap was missing from PATH. Steps: Windows 11 install.

Hash and signature

The project publishes file hashes and a detached signature for each release file. Compare the SHA-256 of your copy of nmap-7.991-setup.exe with this value before you run it. A match means the bytes are the published installer.

SHA-256

93BFD37B DB31A7AD FD932BEB 5DBCE060 25DA691D 01A0939E 806EA704 F7367657

Windows installers and executables are signed with an EV code-signing certificate issued to Insecure.Com LLC. Check that signer in the file properties after the hash matches. Source tarballs have their own published hashes.

How the trust checks fit together

If antivirus complains

The usual hit is ncat.exe, not a hidden installer bundle. Ncat can open a remote shell, so some engines label that behavior as malicious. The project has called this a false positive and noted that software such as PowerShell is not flagged for the same class of behavior.

On an older 7.91 installer, a public multi-engine report showed only a small number of engines flagging the file. Later installers picked up a Microsoft Trusted Source designation on that report. Still hash 7.991 yourself. Steps are in the antivirus guide.
